Venice exists in a realm of its own — an impossible city rising from the waters of the lagoon, where every campo, calle and canal tells a story spanning over a thousand years. From the splendor of San Marco to the quiet mystery of Dorsoduro, from the artisan traditions of Murano and Burano to the palatial grandeur of the Grand Canal, Venice offers a wedding experience unlike any other place on earth.
As a Venice wedding photographer, I’ve worked in the city’s most prestigious venues — from the Tiepolo-frescoed salons of Aman Venice (where George and Amal Clooney married in 2014) to the legendary Belmond Cipriani on Giudecca, from the Gothic splendor of Ca’ Sagredo to intimate ceremonies at Palazzo Contarini Polignac in Dorsoduro, the former salon of Princess de Polignac where Stravinsky and Debussy once performed.
Wedding Venues in Venice
Venice’s wedding venues are spread across its six historic sestieri and the islands of the lagoon. Along the Grand Canal, the palatial options are unmatched: The Gritti Palace (Hemingway’s favorite Venetian hotel), Aman Venice in the Tiepolo-frescoed Palazzo Papadopoli, Ca’ Sagredo with its UNESCO-recognized art collection, and the legendary Palazzo Pisani Moretta — scene of the annual Ballo del Doge carnival masquerade.
For exclusive island settings, San Clemente Palace Kempinski occupies an entire private island with capacity for up to 600 guests, while Fondazione Giorgio Cini on San Giorgio Maggiore — a Palladian masterpiece that hosted Jeff Bezos’s wedding in 2025 — offers one of the most monumental settings in all of Italy. The JW Marriott on the private Isola delle Rose and the iconic Hotel Excelsior on the Lido, home of the Venice Film Festival since 1932, complete the island portfolio.
In the heart of the city, Ca’ Vendramin Calergi in Cannaregio (where Wagner spent his final days), the Baroque splendor of Ca’ Zenobio degli Armeni in Dorsoduro, and the 760-year-old Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista in San Polo offer distinctly Venetian alternatives to the grand hotels.
The Grand Canal Experience
The Grand Canal is one of the most spectacular wedding backdrops in the world. Arriving by gondola or private water taxi, gliding past centuries of architectural masterpieces, emerging at the water gate of a Gothic palazzo — these moments are uniquely Venetian. I’ve photographed arrivals at the private pier of Palazzo Cavalli-Franchetti beside the Accademia Bridge, romantic gondola portraits at sunset through the narrow canals of Cannaregio, and candlelit ceremonies in palazzos whose walls hold frescoes by Tiepolo and Longhi.
Hidden Venice: Beyond San Marco
Beyond Piazza San Marco lies a labyrinth of campi, narrow calli, and secret gardens. This is where Venice reveals its authentic character — in the quiet Dorsoduro neighborhood near the Accademia, among the artisan workshops of San Polo, in the residential calm of Cannaregio far from the tourist crowds. I love photographing couples wandering through these hidden corners during the blue hour, when Venice transforms into something almost dreamlike, lamplights flickering on water, footsteps echoing in empty piazzas.
Your Destination Wedding in Venice
Venice is remarkably accessible for international guests. Marco Polo Airport is just 20 minutes from Piazza San Marco by water taxi, and Treviso Airport offers additional low-cost connections. The city’s compact scale means that everything — from getting ready at a Grand Canal palazzo to a ceremony on a private island to dinner in a candlelit courtyard — can unfold within the enchanted boundaries of the lagoon.
Whether you’re planning a grand palazzo celebration for 300 guests or an intimate elopement for two on a misty morning bridge, Venice offers something that no other city in the world can match: the sensation of being suspended between water and sky, between history and dream, in a setting of incomparable beauty.
