Lake Como has drawn romantics for centuries — from the poets of the Grand Tour to George Clooney, who chose the village of Laglio as his home. Nestled between the Alps and Milan, this dramatic Y-shaped lake is today one of the most sought-after destination wedding locations in the world, offering couples a rare combination of natural grandeur, historic architecture and Italian elegance.

As a Lake Como wedding photographer, I’ve had the privilege of working at nearly every major venue on the lake — from the iconic terraces of Villa del Balbianello in Lenno to the Belle Époque splendor of Grand Hotel Tremezzo, from intimate ceremonies at Villa Pliniana in Torno to grand celebrations at Villa Erba in Cernobbio.

Wedding Venues on Lake Como

The lake offers an extraordinary variety of wedding venues, each with its own character. The western shore — Cernobbio, Lenno, Tremezzo, Moltrasio — is home to legendary properties like Villa d’Este, Villa Balbiano (featured in House of Gucci), Passalacqua (World’s Best Hotel 2023) and Villa Pizzo, where John Legend and Chrissy Teigen celebrated their wedding.

On the eastern shore, Varenna’s Villa Monastero and the secluded Villa Pliniana in Torno offer a more intimate atmosphere, while Bellagio — at the tip of the peninsula where the three branches of the lake meet — provides the quintessential Como experience, with Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni as its crown jewel.

Whether you’re planning a 30-guest ceremony in a private garden or a 300-guest celebration in a lakeside ballroom, Lake Como has your perfect setting.

Arriving by Riva Boat

One of the most cinematic moments I photograph is a couple’s arrival by classic wooden Riva boat. The gentle splash of water, the reflection of centuries-old villas on the calm surface, the Alps rising in the background — these are the images that make Lake Como weddings truly unforgettable. Many venues, including Villa del Balbianello and Villa Pliniana, are accessible only by boat, making the arrival itself part of the story.

The Lake Como Light

Photographers speak reverently about the light on Lake Como. The way it plays across the water during golden hour, how it filters through villa gardens in Tremezzo, the dramatic interplay of sun and mountain shadow over Bellagio — it creates a quality of light I haven’t found anywhere else in Italy. This is why I return to photograph weddings here year after year, always discovering new perspectives.

Your Destination Wedding in Lake Como

Every couple who chooses Lake Como becomes part of a centuries-long tradition of romance — from Napoleon and Josephine at Villa Sola Cabiati to today’s international couples drawn by the same irresistible charm. Just one hour from Milan Malpensa airport and surrounded by world-class hotels, the lake makes destination wedding planning remarkably seamless for guests traveling from around the world.

I consider it a privilege to document these stories, capturing not just the events of the day but the essence of why couples fall in love with this extraordinary destination.
